Many people love to have pets, such as dogs and cats. There are also people who enjoy taking care of bigger animals, such as horses. Pet owners really do the best they can to make sure that their beloved pets are always kept healthy and safe. They are given food and treats that are healthy and may even provide special supplements and vitamins. They even go to salons that cater exclusively to animals and in recent years, there are even restaurants that cater to people with pets. And because of the love and care that pet owners give, it is painful for them when their pets get sick, especially when it is already too late to save the pet. So how will you know when you need to call a veterinarian? Animals cannot verbalize their concerns, so what signs must you look for?
The first sign of illness that you may see is when your pet shows unusual sluggishness. When your pet is not in its usual playful mood and just stays in its bed or corner – that should tell you that there might be something wrong. Other related signs are inability to walk or signs of imbalance when walking. Some animals, such as dogs, may walk around in circles when they are sick.
Labored breathing is also a major concern. If it has not been moving around and yet it has difficulty breathing, then you must be alarmed. Wheezing is also a sign that there is a problem.
Digestive system related signs include diarrhea, constipation and vomiting. When these happens for more than a couple of days, call your vet or bring your pet to the clinic.
There are also signs that you might consider as emergency situations. An example would be seizure. Loss of consciousness is also an emergency sign and if your pet is crying out loud, that should also tell you there is something wrong.
All these things will not be easy for you to identify unless you are very familiar with your pet’s regular day-to-day condition. It is therefore important that you observe your pet well so you would know signs that are unusual.
